As we transition from winter to spring here in NYC, there is no doubt that we all are looking for signs of sparkly renewal and regeneration. Our Spring Greening Contest is certainly one way that we are sprucing up our abodes and the clutter in our lives by making things fresh and new again. One of the most impressive submissions we received for our DIY design contest was this eco sparkly recycled plastic jewelry by Kumvana Gomani. This innovative Swedish designer has found a a great way to turn recycled soda and water bottles into snowflakes and crystallized leaves that radiate green chic bling.

I think that the idea of simply taking something that would have been thrown away and making it into something else is only going to postpone the useful life of the material, after which it will just have to be thrown away anyways.
luckily these things are made from recyclable plastic bottles. But, just simply changing the use of the materials doesn’t change the chemical makeup. It is still a material that we should not have been consuming in the first place much less putting back into our environment.
Not to mention, most people don’t want to wear trash. IT might be ok now because being green is a fad, but in the long run reusing trash doesn’t help, its still trash and its still not recyclable in that the useful life is only pushed back.
The artist\’s job is to make you see. Ms. Gomani\’s work reminds me of Picasso\’s transformation of bicycle parts into a sculpture of a bull\’s head: exquisite and inspiring.
