Castell D'empordaAmsterdam-based studio Concrete has created a stunning rustic pavilion made from steel parasols for the renovated Castell d’Empordà boutique hotel located on the Spanish Costa Brava. The design brief called for a roof to cover the terrace that works in harmony with the adjacent building - a castle which dates all the way back to 1301. Concrete created a series of 12 abstract flattened shapes from rusted steel to enclose the space and protect guests from mistral winds, scorching sun, and the odd rain shower.1
Castell D'empordaThe roof is structured like a floating yet solid canopy above the terrace.2
Castell D'empordaThe designers chose to leave the terrace open, ensuring guests don't miss any views of the picturesque landscape.3
Castell D'empordaThese structures are welded together and the spaces in-between are filled with glass.4
Castell D'empordaThe ceiling and its supporting steel columns are painted white, creating a feeling of space beneath the outdoor roof.5

Castell D'empordaThe roof is modern and simple - a perfectly practical construction for the historic hotel.7
