Located beside a hospital, the playground is handicap accessible
After clearing the small plot of land adjacent to the hospital, van Baarsen and van Hoeckel livened the space up with some recycled materials turned into an inspiring pseudo hospital. In addition to the scrapped ambulance found in a junk yard, they used tires, springs and axles to create a colorful play environment that stimulates the children’s imagination.
Completely handicap accessible, the playground also promotes interaction between the disabled kids and other children in the neighborhood. Since disability is sometimes poorly understood in African countries, a strong stigma is attached to children who appear to be “different.” This inventive new clubhouse for children was designed to break down social barriers and nurture tolerance.
