Gallery: Six Flood-Proof Buildings That Can Survive Rising Tides

Dutch Floating Houses by DuraVermeer and WaterStudio

In places like the Netherlands, where rising and falling sea levels are the norm, designers have been working on floating homes for a long time. DuraVermeer and WaterStudio are perfecting the art of homes that float on water, and some of their latest designs are for homes built on dry land that can float when the levels rise. While Brad Pitt's floating house only floats in case of emergency, these Dutch houses are designed to rise and fall almost daily. + DuraVermeer Floating Dutch Homes + Amphibious Floating Architecture by WaterStudio

Floods often come up quickly with almost no warning, so it’s imperative to have safe and secure designs, especially in places known for flooding. Even regions that aren’t known for rising waters can be taken by surprise. Good flood design should first of all protect the lives of people who live there and then secondly be able to handle the force of the water and hopefully not be completely destroyed or ruined. With increases in the strength of hurricanes, changing weather patterns and rising sea levels, we have a lot of work ahead of us.
