SOLAR POWERED GLASS

by , 10/11/05

Here’s some exciting news in the evolution of solar-power: a California-based company has recently started making Solar-powered glass. Called Power Glass – this new material utilizes innovative technology that allows transparent glass windows to produce electricity from the power of the sun. Manufacturing company Xsunx has created very thin semi-transparent coatings that can be used to create large area monolithic solar cell structures that you can see through. This transparency makes Power Glass glazing desirable for placing over glass, plastics, and other see-through structures.

XsunX claims that Power Glass will operate at half the efficiency of conventional solar cells but with only a quarter of the cost. From a design perspective Power Glass is certainly a lot less obtrusive than those bulky free-standing solar panels which need to be installed on roofs – and could allow designers more aesthetic freedom in which to create energy efficient buildings.

Solar Illuminations (who have their headquarters in Florida) is likely to be offering solar powered glass panels from 2010 onwards. They will be available for retro-fit and for new construction. Solar Illuminations is well known for innovative solar lighting fixtures. They design many of the products they offer. Solar glazing is a fairly new technology but even with around 50% efficiency it still has huge advantages and for ‘green’ projects it is an absolute ‘must have’ feature.

  13. solarilluminations solarilluminations says:

Renewable Energy Developments is the sister company of Solar Illuminations and they are responsible for the solar glass. The product is at their SW Florida facility and is pending Miami Dade hurricane rating approval and ASTM certification. It will be on sale to the public within the next 2-3 months. Retail price is expected to be around US$600 per square meter based upon being wind/impact resistant (to Miami Dade protocols). A 1 meter square solar glass window will provide 60 Watts (peak 133v dc), cancel 30dB of sound, be UV cancelling, be tinted and be certified impact resistant. You cannot get any more from a piece of glass than all of that!
