This diagram illustrates how the team achieved the curved form with digital modeling

The design process is fairly complicated, but suffice to say that it only took six weeks to get from design to fabrication and to assembly – a three-step process made possible by parametric modeling. The greatest challenge was to ensure the temporary structure could provide maximum space using the smallest amount of materials, a not-so-easy feat given the pavilion’s curvature.

Composed of nearly 1500 individual cells that need to bend in order to achieve the curved form, the structure was nonetheless cut from a flat Coroplast sheet, mitigating material waste. “Using a custom Python script, each cell is optimized so as to eliminate any interior seams and make them as planar as possible, greatly simplifying fabrication,” the design team said in their brief.
