Gallery: Steven Holl Architects Unveil Green-Roofed Ecology and Plannin...

China is renowned for its soaring developments, and among the most fascinating is the Tianjin Ecocity, an urban regeneration project that is rising from a reclaimed salt pan in a heavily polluted area of Bohai Bay. The Ecocity's cultural district will soon see its first buildings - a pair of museums designed by celebrated studio Steven Holl Architects. The green-roofed Tianjin Ecocity Ecology and Planning Museum will complement the surrounding site while providing a center for living exhibits and ecological education.

The project consists of two museums; the Ecology museum will be connected via a high-speed tram to the central business district of the Ecocity itself, and will focus specifically on Earth to Earth, Earth to Man, and Earth to Cosmos ecology. It will be organized to incorporate open-plan offices and green roof terraces with living exhibits.

In contrast the Planning Museum will provide information about the Tianjin Ecocity as a whole as well as broader issues relating to green architecture, and will feature temporary exhibition areas and digital projection spaces. The space will open out onto a green roofscape and will be naturally daylit from the top level.
