Stunning Geometric Art Studio Sits in Gentle Contrast to Rugged Fogo Island

This stunning art studio on Fogo Island doesn't blend into its wild and wooly location, but it's not supposed to. Commissioned by the Shorefast Foundation in order to foster care and respect for the fragile but merciless northern landscape, this is just one of three <a href="http://inhabitat.com/fer-studio-unveils-a-green-vision-for-downtown-inglewood-california/">art studios</a> designed by Canadian architect <a href="http://www.saunders.no/">Todd Saunders</a>. The long studio uses construction methods and materials that are endemic to this remote island in Newfoundland, enabling winter-time prefabrication in a local workshop. Absolutely brimful of light, the long studio is a showcase of the best in beautiful, simple, and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/15-mind-blowing-shipping-container-skyscrapers-vertical-farms-and-buried-cities/">sustainable architecture</a>.

The studio will weather in time as a result of being pounded by the fierce forces of nature.

The Shorefast Foundation commissioned Todd Saunders to create three art studios that show respect for the landscape and tradition of Fogo Island.

The weather in Newfoundland can get pretty rough, so the uplifted studio is also bolted down with a small concrete foundation.

The studio can be planted anywhere.

From a distance, the studio's impact is gentle and respectful of the incredible Fogo Island night.

The simple design allows for a combination of security and solitude, as well as continuity with the natural surroundings.

Called the long studio for a reason, the small home has plenty of wall and floor space.

Although very reflective of Todd Saunders' style, this interior mimics what homes in this part of Newfoundland have looked like for a long time.

Large windows and a skylight allow plenty of natural lighting. Given its remote location, energy use will be necessarily scarce.

We see a lot of stunning work, but Todd Saunders' simple and elegant design is definitely an Inhabitat favorite.
