SubHusPart of the <a href="http://www.stokkoy.no/" target="_blank">Stokkøya Sea Center</a> in Norway, this amazing hotel has been built partially <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2010/08/18/6-fascinating-underground-homes-that-go-above-and-beyond/" target="_blank">submerged</a> into the hillside to minimize the structure's visual and environmental impact on the coastal area. Designed by Oslo-based <a href="http://www.pir2.no/" target="_blank">Pir II Arkitektkontor,</a> and owned and operated by Tori Langklopp and Roar Svenning, the <a href="http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=no&tl=en&u=http://www.pir2.no/prosjekter/stokkoy-sjosenter---sub-hus/&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&twu=1&usg=ALkJrhgM10Usng7P-2q7TXjNJ6lMcdGo1A" target="_blank">SubHus</a> is a twelve room bunker-inspired hotel featuring uniquely decorated rooms, furnished with thrift store and antique finds and highlighted with stunning views of the beach settled below.1
SubHusThe subterranean hotel is a set of linked rooms with private bathrooms and private patios constructed from glass and concrete.2
SubHusThe rooms are partially buried underground with a sod roof covering the back of each room.3
SubHusThe below-ground provides insulation for each of the rooms and manages to minimize the visual impact of the hotel.4
SubHusThe hotel and sea center are located on the island of Stokkøya, which hosts one of Norway's best beaches.5
SubHusTori Langklopp and Roar Svenning, who own and operate the hotel, run the entire Stokkøya Sea Center, which renowned for its waters and diving activities.6
SubHusThe hotel is mostly constructed from concrete and glass with trellises that cover each cabin's private patio.7
SubHusThe patios have translucent covers that protect from them rain, but also let in sun to warm the concrete space.8
SubHusThe Sea Center also includes: the Beach Bar, waterfront restaurant in a glass box, as well as other nearby accommodations and dive facilities.9
SubHusEach room is decorated with thrift store pieces, antique auction wins and other design-worthy finds.10
SubHusThe rooms are naturally daylit with the help of skylights installed in the sod roof. Tubes draw the light into the rooms.11
SubHusEach room comes with its own private bathroom and patio.12
SubHusPrices for the cabins range from 890 krone (including breakfast in a single cabin) to up to 1250 krone for a double cabin.13
SubHusConstruction on SubHus began in 2008 and was opened to the public in May of 2009.14
