Gallery: Team Valencia’s Solar Decathlon SML System House Adapts to a G...

From this image we can see what an individual module looks like. The prefabricated design is simple but elegant at the same time. As the basic module remains the same in this design, they can reduce costs and complication for large scale building work by producing large numbers of the pre-cut timbers at their off-site workshop.

This “medium” version of their design was fully constructed in under a fortnight, proving the credentials of their efficient building technique. The kitchen was fitted with the appliances off-site and then simply dropped into place by a crane during construction. Labor time on site was significantly reduced.

The SML system provides a vision of how modular design can be easily integrated into quality building practices, and how the residents can add their input into the potential final design. Combined with the possibility for extension and customized units, the Valencian team have created a high quality product that will surely be competition during this year’s Solar Decathlon.
