Led by Rick Cavallaro, DDWFTTW has developed a wind-powered car called the Blackbird that is capable of traveling upwind at speeds faster than the wind! In 2010 Cavallaro’s team set a world record by traveling downwind at 2.8 times the speed of the wind – and they recently tweaked the vehicle to travel upwind as well. The downwind record was an amazing accomplishment, but the latest feat is even more astonishing.

    hi Rick,
    do you remenber me (inventor of ROBIPLAN wind motor in france near PARIS).
    I am glad to read the Black Bird is also able to go 100% up the wind and in fact breaked a new record.
    I think you have the best Wind-powered véhicle in the word.
    tree questions :
    have you a gear box on black bird ?
    are the 2 fans of the propeller orientable/ajustable during the run ?
    what about a full concept able to run up down and also under lateral wind

    Way cool. I’d never thought of going downwind this way. On cats, tris tacking downwind is how we go faster and I’d bet with this upwind model they will go faster downwind doing the same as their other version.
