The Cross House is a Naturally Lit Home Hidden in the Forest of Mount Nelson in Tasmania

Designed to float above a sloping site overlooking River Derwent in Tasmania, the Cross House designed by <a href="http://esanrahmani.net/2012/cross_house/">Esan Rahmani and Kathryn Hynard </a>is embedded with the natural logic, colors and characteristics of the surrounding Mount Nelson <a href="http://inhabitat.com/first-photos-of-298-million-year-old-forest-unveiled/">forest</a>. Ample skylights allow light to flood in from above reducing the amount of energy required during the day, and at night they provide its occupants with a light show of stars. From the rhythmic patterns of the openings that reference the trees to the local timbers used to clad the exterior of the house, the house always finds a way to connect with the landscape.

All the community living areas are located at ground level including a family room, living room, bathroom, kitchen and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/lofty-tree-pod-dining-at-the-soneva-kiri-resort-thailand/">dining room</a>.

A master bedroom and two guest rooms are located above for privacy.

The interior palette is reminiscent of the surrounding forest, and warm timbers and black highlights create an intimate and secure atmosphere, which is offset by the use of white materials to ensure an open and light interior.

Three outdoor areas outdoor living space year-round; during the summer season the dining/kitchen space can be opened to the deck and pool, and a stepped garden with a central fireplace is located at a lower level to provide a private outdoor retreat during winter.
