Gallery: The Farmery is a Farm and Mar...

We've seen farms and farmers markets, and we've seen shipping containers repurposed into all kinds of creative structures - but we've never seen all of these combined in one convenient space until now. The Farmery is comprised of four shipping containers that are each outfitted with a gourmet mushroom growing system on the inside and growing panels on the outside walls where small crops are grown. The system saves space, energy, and time, and the crops are sold in a mini farmer's market snuggled in the space between.

The Famery has successfully raised $25,000 on Kickstarter to make this project a reality, so if you live in Raleigh, you’re in for a special treat. So far they have developed two prototypes along with a proprietary modular growing system that allows the plant racks to be moved. Lightweight and mobile, these panels can be moved so that crops can be harvested through openings in the enclosures. They also save a great deal of space and insulates the shipping container.

Comprised of lean-to greenhouses attached to the sides of the shipping containers and a central greenhouse that spans the two stacks of shipping containers. Artisanal farmers in the neighborhood and others can also display their harvest, and it only requires a total space of 55 square feet. Heating is provided by combining solar water heaters with radiant heat pex tubing and cooling is provided by evaporative coolers, shade cloths and misting fans. This is a wonderful solution for both urban and rural contexts!
