Seoul-based Yamasaki Ku Hong Associates Design Lab is building a set of small-sized apartments that will mix ‘life, work and play’ all in one space. Dubbed 'The Great Wall', this apartment-factory and commercial-retail building will bring the citizens of Suizhong an answer to the lack of green space in their lives. Located in the Liaoning Digital Technology Industrial District, the architects are trying to develop the next generation of ‘apartment-factories’ that will highlight ecological, economic and social matters in their program.

The Korean term ‘apartment-factory’ is usually employed to describe piled up, small-scale manufacturing factories or office. However, in many instances, these stockpiled structures have given way to poor daylighting and problems associated with poor working conditions. Acknowledging these issued, Yamasaki Ku Hong Associates Design Lab set out to design a more sustainable model for living.
