According to Treehugger, yesterday the city of Toronto announced the winning design for the new St. Lawrence Market North Building. Proposed by Adamson Associates Architects and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the design is a modern upgrade to the historic St. Lawrence neighborhood that respectfully integrates with the older buildings while highlighting views of St. Lawrence Hall and St. Lawrence South Market. The mixed-use development will take advantage of green building strategies ranging from geothermal heating and cooling to a lush green roof, and it will include an indoor food market, office space, and a courthouse.
St. Lawrence Market North will be a five story building with an open market on the first floor, topped with office space and the Toronto Court Services. The market’s structure recalls historic market and town hall buildings, and it offers a beautifully-framed view of St. Lawrence Hall to the north. A partially glazed facade lets shoppers view the historic neighborhood’s street life from inside the building.
As far as sustainable design, the market will be built according to Toronto Green Standard and will include natural daylighting and ventilation as well as an energy-efficient HVAC system. A geothermal heating and cooling system will significantly reduce the energy demands of the large market. The roof, which includes skylights for daylight, is also covered in vegetation to help reduce solar heat gain and collect rainwater. This new green public complex will help make the historic section a vibrant and central part of the community all year long.
