The new design will cost roughly the same as the current design but will have lower maintenance and installation costs over time. The first full-scale prototype will be constructed in Lower Manhattan as part of the Re-Construction Art Program and will be overseen by the Downtown Alliance. The NYC Department of Buildings plans to issue a Bulletin that approves the new design as a standard throughout the city. Though the design will not be mandatory, the hope is that the lower costs and better quality-of-life associated with these “Urban Umbrellas” will entice contractors to ditch the old sidewalk sheds for a better, brighter new look.

I would like to see a pipe scaffold on top of one of these structures.

Great Idea. The current sheds are just horrible and must be a nightmare for tourists. Young-Hwan Choi’s design is great. Maybe it can also include some panels for public phone chargers and other uses. -> G7 STUDIOS <-
SUch a fantastic design with cool architecture! Love it!
Thank goodness! It’s about time NY starts doing something about those dreadful sheds. Love it!
Great concept.
I would love it to be expanded so that it was modular and available at hardware stores for many other uses and for people to use at home. Modular and interconnecable with other mediums for snap in enhancements for high wind etc. Thanks for the idea and I hope it goes far and fast.
This may have emergency housing potential as well.
