Another successful NYC design competition! New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently announced that Young-Hwan Choi’s “Urban Umbrella” design won the urbanSHED design contest to re-think sidewalk sheds in New York City. Sidewalk shed design has been stagnant for 50 years and they are in sore need of a makeover. Meant to protect pedestrians from construction, the current sidewalk sheds are a jumble of plywood, beams and protruding bolts. Mr. Choi melded beautiful form with perfect function to create a new design worthy of the buildings and people it will protect.

I would like to see a pipe scaffold on top of one of these structures.

Great Idea. The current sheds are just horrible and must be a nightmare for tourists. Young-Hwan Choi’s design is great. Maybe it can also include some panels for public phone chargers and other uses. -> G7 STUDIOS <-
SUch a fantastic design with cool architecture! Love it!
Thank goodness! It’s about time NY starts doing something about those dreadful sheds. Love it!
Great concept.
I would love it to be expanded so that it was modular and available at hardware stores for many other uses and for people to use at home. Modular and interconnecable with other mediums for snap in enhancements for high wind etc. Thanks for the idea and I hope it goes far and fast.
This may have emergency housing potential as well.
