Gallery: World’s Most Advanced H...

A new hospital to be built in Stockholm wants to be to health sciences what the Large Hadron Collider is to physicists.  The new Karolinska Solna University Hospital is expected to become the world’s most advanced hospital and will also be aiming for LEED Gold certification. Designed by Tengbom Architects and developed by Skanska, the ultramodern hospital will place a strong focus on the patient, and the design is based on research to reduce the spread of infection and promote rapid recovery.

The new Karolinska Solna University Hospital is expected to be the first university hospital to achieve LEED Gold certification as well as the gold level of the Swedish certification system Miljöklassad Byggnad (environmentally classified building). Energy efficiency will play a major role in the new hospital and is expected to use half the power that the existing university hospital uses. Operated with minimal environmental impact, it is expected to be carbon neutral and utilize durable, recyclable materials based on renewable sources. Advanced lighting controls based on daylighting coming into the building will help save energy and a controlled ventilation system will also help improve indoor air quality.

The mission of the new hospital is “patient first”, and to that end, each patient has their own private room, harmoniously designed to be a safe and comfortable place for the entire family. Designed to stand for up to 100 years, the building is durable and flexible for new advances in technology. The hope is that doctors, patients and technicians in the US and internationally who are looking to benefit from the latest technology and advances in health science will come to Stockholm and the new hospital. Construction is expected to start this summer in 2010 with the first patient admitted at the end of 2015, and will cost about SEK 14,5 billion.

The combination of healthy food and “harmoniously designed to be a safe and comfortable place for the entire family” makes it very interesting if somebody comment of the type of food how it can be healthy.
