Taking the home’s original character in mind, Saint decided that the best way to minimize structural changes or damages would be to add on a glassed-in kitchen to the home rather than renovating the home’s original kitchen. The old kitchen was converted into a light-filled foyer that leads into the new box-like structure, which was built with large glass panels and a low stabilizing wall that runs around three sides of the building. The result is a luminous, contemporary kitchen that surprisingly blends in quite nicely with the cottage’s cozy character.

The cube-like structure has double-glazed glass walls and ceiling to maintain temperature control in the cooler months. During spring and summer, residents can open the sliding glass doors. The kitchen flooring uses the same stone as the outdoor terrace, creating a nice continuity from the exterior to the interior.

Although the kitchen makeover was obviously a success, building with glass has its challenges, “We had to be really careful about how we planned the layout of the kitchen, so that in the end we didn’t need to fix anything high up,” says Saint.

As for the kichen’s interior design, the designer went with a soft matte white cabinetry, modern appliances, and ample storage. Track lighting and subtle built-in uplighting keep the space illuminated at night. Perfect for those late night crumpet cravings!
