With a new baby on the way, this family of four was outgrowing their two-bedroom apartment and wanted to expand. Their solution was to buy the loft apartment upstairs and completely renovate the space to create a new safe haven. wUNDERground and Design Development worked together to create a new plan that provided 3,600 sq ft of shared family space downstairs and private rooms upstairs. The bottom floor offers up a large family room, along with a kitchen, formal living room and dining room. The upper floor has three bedrooms, a shared work area and a master suite.
The space was completely gutted and rebuilt first to improve the thermal and acoustic performance of the exterior walls with CityProof windows, a re-caulked and bio-spray insulated perimeter and recycled denim insulation. Heating is provided via radiant floor heating. Filters were installed for drinking water and the showers while a humidifier and air scrubbers improve the air quality. VOCs were eliminated in all the finishes and custom interior details were handcrafted at Design Development’s workshops in Queens. All these strategies work to reduce allergens, improve indoor air quality and minimize adverse health affects. The interior design work was completed by Damon Liss Design.
