New York artist <a href="http://thomasmckean.blogspot.com/">Thomas McKean</a> collects the discarded cards to create incredible miniature sculptures and intricate mosaics -- and cleans up waste at the same time!1
thomas mckean, metrocard artDespite the limited color palette and small size, McKean has found a wealth of inspiration in the 2x3 three pieces of plastic, transforming them into everything from bird nests to self portraits.2

thomas mckean, metrocard artThe hike included a $1 surcharge for each new MetroCard, hoping to encourage riders to refill their cards, thus reducing litter and cutting costs.11
thomas mckean, metrocard artThe MTA estimates that it spends $13 million annually to print MetroCards -- and that does not include the cost of cleaning up cards discarded in the system.12
