Weaving StudioThis beautiful studio space in Washington draws together daylighting, built-in storage, lots of open space and inspiring views. A professional weaver and her husband retired to the San Juan Islands and decided to build a generous studio space to hold all of her equipment behind their existing home. Topped off with a green roof, this beautiful weaving studio, designed by Seattle-based Prentiss Architects, serves as a gallery space and an extra bedroom.1
Weaving StudioThe client sought to build a studio where all of her tools, equipment and looms could be set in one building.2
Weaving StudioShe also wanted to have an extra bedroom and bathroom for guests, a way to display her work in a gallery-like setting, and space to hold meetings and workshops.3
Weaving StudioThe studio is built into a rocky hillside behind the main house.4

Weaving StudioA back wall contains built-in storage with sliding doors to hide away equipment and materials when she needed the space.7
Weaving StudioWhen the doors slide open the reveal tons of storage space and help keep everything very organized.8
Weaving StudioSurrounding the main workspace are a dying room, an office, and a bathroom.9
Weaving StudioTucked behind the workspace and into the side of the hill is a sewing room and an extra bedroom.10
Weaving StudioThe wet room, where the weaver dyes her materials, has large doors that open to the outdoors to allow for quick and easy ventilation.11
Weaving StudioDaylighting streams in through the large front windows and the skylights on the roof, which illuminate the back sewing room and the bedroom.12
Weaving StudioThe roof of the main part of the building is covered in grass, which insulates the building and infiltrates rainwater.13
