Denmark’s Solar-Powered Herstedlund Center is a Vibrant Community Hub

Denmark's Community Center Herstedlund boasts a refined modern facade that is every bit as dynamic as its interior. The project features a skate board ramp and a rock climbing wall that can be be used by the local community at any time of day, and the building's facade is composed of a combination of opaque and translucent panels that allow for plenty of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylighting">daylighting</a> throughout the year. Located in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albertslund">Alberstlund</a>, the center was designed by <a href="http://www.dortemandrup.dk/">Dorte Mandrop Arkitekter Architects</a>, who envisioned the project as a sort of contemporary tree at the edge of the glades.

<a href="http://www.dortemandrup.dk/">Dorte Mandrop Arkitekter Architects</a> designed the project with sustainability in mind, and it meets Tier 2 Energy standards.

The third floor of the community center is completely opened to the sky above, but is caged in for safety purposes.

The community center will be open during the day as well as at night, for year-round use.

The center's green building strategies include solar panels, passive cooling systems, and thermo-active decks for energy-efficient heating.

The building also collects rainwater for flushing toilets, and motion-controlled lights ensure efficient use of electricity by the building’s occupants.

The interior of the building is flexible enough to change and grow with the surrounding community.

The center can be used around the clock for activities such as teaching, dancing, sports, yoga, and barbeques.

The floor of the performance space can transform into steps and seats. The changing elevation can be used as part of the space or as a space for audiences.

The first floor is dedicated to performances, while the second floor contains a multipurpose/multi-functional classroom space.

The bright yellow interior of the performance space provides an excellent contrast during the winter months, activating the interior areas throughout the entire year.

The second floor of the building's multipurpose space also makes a great classroom.

Plenty of daylight floods the second floor of the community center.

A caged-in area with turf on the third floor of the community center provides an active and safe place to run around.
