Watervilla de Omval by +31 Architects_3Amsterdam is well-known for its quaint canals and classic riverboats. However, the melding of modern architecture and the water is something that we don't see too often. Designed by +31 Architects, the Watervilla de Omval is a streamlined houseboat that floats peacefully upon the Amstel River. A stunning display of modernity in one of Europe's most historic capitals, this aluminum-clad structure also boasts a spectacular interior set off by ample daylighting. The low-profile floating house is a prime example of how contemporary design can fit amicably in any context when properly executed.1

Watervilla de Omval by +31 Architects 2The interior circulation is simple and straightforward - it consists of a living area, kitchen, and a bedroom split between two levels.6
Watervilla de Omval by +31 Architects 14The split level makes it possible to create a terrace on the south side without exceeding the maximum building height of three meters.7

Watervilla de Omval by +31 Architects_5While the Watervilla de Omval certainly exhibits a modern aesthetic, +31 Architects was careful to reflect the low-slung and elongated profile featured in other houseboats found along the river.10
