Illuminated Shipping Container Wall is a Temporary Music Festival Venue in Rio de Janeiro

Music festivals are one of the reasons many of us look forward to the warmer weather, but with hordes of revelers, numerous vendors dispensing beverage after beverage and a whole mini city that needs to be erected and torn down in a matter of days, they can generate just as much waste as they do festivity. So when <a href="http://www.bjaweb.com.br/">Bernardes Jacobsen</a> was tasked with designing a more sustainable event space for the Tim Festival, which takes place yearly in Marina da Glória, Rio de Janeiro, they decided to use <a href="http://inhabitat.com/shipping-containers-could-provide-disaster-relief-for-haiti/">shipping containers </a>as their medium. Stacking up the colorful containers as a staggered wall, they were able to create an event space with bold pops of visual interest without having to build a slew of structures from new materials.

Images by <a href="http://www.leonardofinotti.com/">Leonardo Finotti</a> Instead of simply piling the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/2-million-haitians-live-in-tents-they-still-need-our-help-rebuilding/">containers</a> one atop the other, Bernardes Jacobsen chose to stagger them slightly, resulting in sporadic pockets of empty space.

Some of the voids were left as is, allowing festival-goers to gaze through at a view of the Morro do Pico hill from the venue's central <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/jagged-chunks-of-sidewalk-reused-to-create-unique-median-for-queens-plaza/">plaza</a>.

Others were filled in with projection screens which came alive with visuals during the concerts.

On the first level of the wall, a yellow container was designated as a bar where concert-goers could pick up drinks and snacks.

Another opening in the wall served as the general admittance area where people could line up. In addition to creating these additional spaces without the need for additional trussing like they typically, the containers acted as a lively spectacle to get festival goers approaching the concert amped for the shows.

While this particular installation was from back in 2007, it seems like using <a href="http://inhabitat.com/16-well-traveled-shipping-containers-add-pop-of-color-to-group-8%e2%80%b2s-architecture-office/">shipping containers</a> as temporary structures for concerts and other outdoor events is becoming more and more of a trend - one that we'd like to see more of!
