The Great Wall Apartment-Factory is a Green Destination for Life, Work and Play

Seoul-based <a title="The Great Wall Apartment-Factory and Retail Building In China Is Designed For Life, Work and Play" href="http://www.ykhlab.com/index.html" target="_blank">Yamasaki Ku Hong Associates Design Lab</a> is building a set of <a title="The Great Wall Apartment-Factory and Retail Building In China Is Designed For Life, Work and Play" href="http://inhabitat.com/bungalove-nomadic-pop-up-prefab-lets-you-go-back-to-the-wild-in-style/" target="_blank">small-sized apartments </a>that will mix ‘life, work and play’ all in one space. Dubbed 'The Great Wall', this apartment-factory and commercial-retail building will bring the citizens of Suizhong an answer to the lack of green space in their lives. Located in the Liaoning Digital Technology Industrial District, the architects are trying to develop the next generation of ‘apartment-factories’ that will highlight ecological, economic and social matters in their program.

The Korean term ‘apartment-factory’ is usually employed to describe piled-up small-scale manufacturing factories or offices, which have managed to become profitable.

However this stockpile construction method has give way to a lack of daylight and poor working conditions for many workers.

Acknowledging these subjects, Yamasaki Ku Hong Associates Design Lab set out to design a more sustainable living model.

The Great Wall apartment-factories are being built in an organic and flexible way that allows the structure to grow with time, adapting to changes.

The apartment-factories are being sandwiched by two differentiated types of retail; one orientated towards entertainment and the other towards day-to-day purchases.

Lots of luscious, green outdoor spaces have been included within the building, integrating small courtyards, wide open spaces and green terraces.

Since The Great Wall apartment-factories are located near the eastern end of the monumental Great Wall of China, the architects based its shape to resemble Hakka Houses, with a green courtyard at the core, surrounded by an enclosed shopping and living building.
