Nestled in the foothills of Eastern Washington's mountains is the Wolf Creek View Cabin, with its sweeping views of the valley from both inside and out. Designed by Balance Associates Architects as two intersecting "L's", the three bedroom cabin features a large protected courtyard that provides cover from the wind and sun, allowing for year round use. Durable and unobtrusive materials help the cabin blend in to its peaceful setting and a solar passive design helps reduce the energy needed inside.

Eastern Washington has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and snowy winters.

The clients wanted a home where they could appreciate the valley from both inside and out, so outdoor living spaces were included in the design.
3

The main part of the home protects the courtyard from the wind and has both a shaded area and a non shaded area for the owners to enjoy in the summer or the winter.

Materials were chosen for their durability, low maintenance and ability to blend in with the surrounding environment.

Low VOC paints and low flow fixtures were also used.

All of the windows and doors make use of high efficiency glazing and the windows on the south and west have adjustable exterior louvers for additional sun shading in the summer months.

Large overhangs shade the interior from the sun in the summer, but let the sun in during the winter to help heat the home.

Concrete floors act as thermal mass and radiant floor heating provides the heat.

As the home is located in the upper northwest, the client's utility sources all its power from hydro power, so the home has zero emissions.
