Modern Mission Hall House is Clad in Recycled Clay Tiles

A new home in the historic village of Sussex, England evokes a modern twist on the country’s architectural past. Designed by <a href="http://www.adamrichards.co.uk/" target="_blank">Adam Richards Architects</a>, Mission Hall features a rounded turret-like wall that is entirely clad in <a href="http://inhabitat.com/new-post-submission-236/" target="_blank">recycled clay tiles</a>. The turret is incorporated into a modern white brick structure that fuses the old with the new.

The two-story house resides beneath the boughs of an old oak tree and overlooks a richly planted yard and the open country. The sustainable home was <a href="http://inhabitat.com/on-the-corner-apartment-building-occupies-a-disused-triangular-plot-of-land/" target="_blank">sited on a small lot</a>, so the architects emphasized the vertical expanse of the home.

The recycled tile front wraps around the home, leading to the backyard. The back façade of the home features large windows and balconies, which give the residents a view of a lawn planted with flowerbeds. Within the flowerbeds, Richards installed a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/casa-leon-low-impact-home-mimics-the-spanish-mountains-with-a-sloping-greef-roof/" target="_blank">rainwater harvesting system</a> which irrigates the lawn and gardens.

The flowerbeds also conceal a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/google-funded-study-finds-us-geothermal-power-capacity-is-ten-times-the-current-coal-power-supply/" target="_blank">geothermal heat pump</a>, which leads to the house and warms the inside with renewable energy.

The upstairs living areas create a stark contrast - they're open, airy, and sun-drenched. Wall-high windows set in French doors open the living room up to a balcony, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/mooarc-transforms-a-15th-century-stone-barn-into-a-light-infused-modern-home/" target="_blank">bringing fresh air inside</a> and providing the interior with a view of the old oak tree. The airy quality of the upstairs floor is accentuated with a flowing white spiral staircase that leads to the cozy sleeping areas.

The bedrooms on the ground floor were designed to be dark and cozy - perfect for sleeping. The kitchen is clad in all white, making it a serene place for the residents, who love to cook and entertain guests.

Mission Halls’ recycled tile turret harkens back to the days of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/minnesota-man-uses-geothermal-heating-system-to-build-soaring-ice-castles/" target="_blank">castles</a>, yet the home is firmly anchored in modernity thanks to its repurposed materials and renewable energy resources.
