6 Awe-Inspiring, Isolated Micro-Shelters from Around the World

You may have noticed that we're big fans of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/top-5-tiniest-tiny-houses/">tiny homes</a> here at Inhabitat, so you can imagine our delight when we came across <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://freecabinporn.com/" target="_blank">Cabin Porn</a>'s collection of little isolated shelters from all around the world. From the stone-clad Muir Hut in the California mountains to the mini ice-fishing shacks of Quebec, check out our roundup of our favorite small, sustainable shelters in the middle of nowhere.

The Muir Trail Hut stands at 12,059 feet within California's rocky peaks and is one of the Trail's greatest landmarks. Built in 1930 by the <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://www.sierraclub.org/" target="_blank">Sierra Club of California</a>, this humble yet strong shelter is built from local stone and blends in perfectly with the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Made by artist <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://davesinaguglia.com/" target="_blank">Dave Sinaguglia</a>, this rustic shelter was made using slab wood off-cuts. Located in a beautiful pine tree forest near <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartford,_Connecticut" target="_blank">Hartford</a>, Connecticut, this shelter is a great place for finding solitude and inspiration.

Dovecote Studio on the Suffolk coast is built inside the shell of an old Victorian dovecote. Designed by <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://www.haworthtompkins.com/built/proj04/index.html" target="_blank">Haworth Tompkins Studio</a>, this highly contrasting shelter now houses the <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://www.aldeburgh.co.uk/" target="_blank">Aldeburgh Music School</a>'s studio.

Located on a remote island called <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoswick" target="_blank">Hoswick</a>, off Scotland's north coast, this gorgeous little cabin was built from local stones and boat fragments, and has part of an old boat as a roof. This photograph was taken by curator <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://www.jedlind.com" target="_blank">Jed Lind</a> for her Small is Beautiful exhibition.

When Quebec's <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Champlain" target="_blank">Lake Champlain</a> freezes every year, its inhabitants push their shacks into it to find their favorite fishing spots. Made of prefab materials and painted with bright colors, these cute skating shelters offer great protection against the biting winds.

If you really want to get away from it all, hop on a boat to <a title="6 Green Isolated Cabins Around the World" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanzibar" target="_blank">Zanzibar</a>. This restaurant stands on a rock surrounded by trees in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and only has space for a handful of people, so be sure to make reservations well in advance!
