Two-Year Renovation of Mies van der Rohe’s Villa Tugendhat is Complete

    Lovers of modern architecture rejoice: a two-year reconstruction of architect <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/mies-van-der-rohe/">Ludwig Mies van der Rohe</a>'s iconic <a href="http://www.tugendhat.eu/">Villa Tugendhat</a> in Brno, Czech Republic was recently completed - and it looks spectacular. The modern masterpiece is one of the most famous houses in the Czech Republic, and after a restoration and reconstruction project that included everything from the structure of the building down to the door hinges and furniture, the historic home has been reopened and is ready for its close-up.

    The round Makassar wall disappeared from the home in 1940, and was considered lost until art historian Miroslav Ambroz discovered it at a university canteen in Brno in 2010, right around the time that renovations began.

    The three-story, single-family home was built on a hillside in Brno in 1930 for a Jewish family, and it was seized in 1939 by the Gestapo and later used as an office and apartment building.

    For the reconstruction, Amos Design sought out original materials, like wood panels, plywood and veneers, and made historically-accurate replicas of other components, like locks and hinges.
