Public spaces like stairwells and bus stops -- sites where people generally have to spend a long time waiting -- now have the opportunity to be transformed into social areas for interaction and entertainment. With the aim of stopping people from retreating into the individual world of a cell-phone, OH.NO.SUMO decided create pop-up spaces able to screen short movies for all the world (or at least local passers-by) to see.

The structure consists of a humble timber frame covered in waterproof fabric that makes it a neat, cozy space for visitors.

Cushions are scattered inside the space, and above the entrance they've built in a screen to show the movies on offer.

In the same way that people use blogs and social networking sites to share videos, individuals can curate the content of Stairway Cinema themselves so that it will always be up-to-date and open to opinion.

OH.NO.SUMO's brilliant concept engages discussion about the role of public space.

It also offers a great alternative to an otherwise boring wait.
