The Adapted Ochre Barn is a Modernist Retreat with an Open Floor Plan in Norfolk

The <a href="http://www.ct-architects.co.uk/projects/ochre-barn/" target="_blank">Ochre Barn</a> was once just an agricultural barn in Norfolk to the east of London, but it's now a modernist getaway for Carl Turner and Mary Martin of <a href="http://www.ct-architects.co.uk/" target="_blank">Carl Turner Architects</a>. They bought the 150-year old farm and envisioned their dream vacation home -- a simple and open space surrounded by history. The adaptive-reuse and renovation involved shoring up the old barn and then outfitting the interior with pods and a slew of OSB finishings.

The long, low brick barn had long since fallen into disrepair when <a href="http://www.ct-architects.co.uk/" target="_blank">Carl Turner</a> and Mary Martin snatched the farm up.

They wanted to create a simple getaway that spoke to the essence of the farm and the barn.

They treated the <a href="http://www.dwell.com/articles/Barns-Ennobled.html" target="_blank">Ochre Barn</a> as though it were a listed building and worked hard to maintain the original exterior.

On the inside they shored up the structure, added new beams and supports which created an intriguing engineered ceiling.

Turner and Martin were inspired by the farm's original functions and enjoyed the look of hay bales inside the barn itself. To recreate that look, they built furniture, walls and independent pods from Oriented Strand Board (OSB).

The OSB has similar colorings and look of hay without the associated allergies.

The open floor plan space provides room for their own retreat, studio space and private residential accommodation.

Adjacent to the Ochre Barn is the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/stealth-barn-is-a-striking-black-guest-house-converted-from-a-plain-barn/">Stealth Barn</a>, which was also designed by Turner on top of an old foundation and serves as a guest cottage and rental.
