The Open Architecture Challenge just unveiled the winning proposal for the 2012 floating theater by Duggan Morris Architects. Entitled “A Strange Cargo of Extra-Ordinary Objects”, the project will act as a mobile venue for cinema-related events and a gathering space for all movie enthusiasts. The theater is part of UP Projects’ ongoing Portavilion program, which is dedicated to creating temporary pavilions throughout London’s parks and public spaces.

Nilsson Pflugfelder's one-size-fits-all approach resulted in a structure that can be attached to the river bank and transformed to create a maximum of various spatial configurations.

• The Floating Cinema OBRA
OBRA’s proposal is a house-boat whose foldable roof can be transformed into a screen and rotated to face the audience seated on the bank.

• The Floating Cinema vPPR
vPPR’s “Cinescope” is a combination of a kaleidoscope, a periscope and a camera obscura.

The project’s main idea is in line with the other shortlisted proposals in terms of transformability - a large pull-up screen changes function and creates a movie screen.
