The Sculptural Object and Function Art Exposition (SOFA) opened at the 7th Regiment Armory in NYC this weekend (June 1 – 3) featuring MAGMA, a curated exhibit on the best in contemporary Icelandic designs. The volcanic, geothermal terrain and the snow-blanketed winters of Iceland seem to provide ideal conditions for the conception and incubation of nature-based, sustainable designs. The Nordic designer Gudrun Lilja Gunnlaugsdottir of Studiobility (who we’ve covered before here) has assembled her favorite picks in conjunction with The Museum of Arts and Design in New York and participating Icelandic design companies and agencies.

The exhibit will highlight the work of Tuesday Project and their MOLI tables (“fracture” in English) created from the native birch trees of Iceland’s sustainable forests. Each handcrafted piece is implanted with a gold, silver, or copper plated plant or miniature branch to remind users of the fragility and limited ‘jewels of nature’ that populate the world we inhabit. + SOFA Exhibit in NYC
