Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM Architects<a href="http://www.mhm-architects.com/" target="_blank">MHM Architects'</a> latest project is a striking energy-efficient <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/boat-house/">boat house</a> on the shores of Milstätter Lake in Austria. The two-story boat house is primed for a low impact life on the shores of the lake - heat pumps provide heating and cooling when needed, while rainwater is collected from the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/green-roof/">green roof</a> to provide irrigation for some of the landscaping. Built from wood and copper, the lake house discretely hides three boats down below with accordion-style doors.1
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsInspired by the ecology of the shoreline, <a href="http://www.mhm-architects.com/" target="_blank">MHM Architects</a> designed and built this striking boat house on Milstätter Lake in Austria.2
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsThe structure is set on pier foundations over the water, but it is anchored to the land behind it.3
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM Architects<a href="http://www.mhm-architects.com/" target="_blank">MHM Architects'</a> design intent was to make the building grow like a reed out of the lake.4
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsThe bottom floor accommodates three boats - one with a motor, one for a rowing and one for a sailing.5
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsBehind this is storage space, which is covered with a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/green-roof/">green roof</a> that connects to the hillside behind. This green ramp leads onto the boathouse and eliminates the need for a boat ramp, which were banned on the lake.6
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsThe upstairs features a wellness center with space for a solarium, massage and fitness training, as well as a small tea kitchen and a relaxing area.7
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsSolar passive design and natural ventilation help to control the building's interior climate, and energy-efficient air-to-water <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/heat-pump/">heat pumps</a> provide heating and cooling when necessary.8
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM Architects<a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/rainwater/">Rainwater</a> is harvested from the green roof and used to irrigate the surrounding landscape.9
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsThe boat house is built from copper and larch wood - low-maintenance materials that will weather beautifully over time.10
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM Architectshe wood will fade to gray and the copper will develop a green patina.11
Millstätter Lake Boat House-MHM ArchitectsThe boats are cleverly hidden behind a moving accordion-style facade that further helps the building blend in.12
