Situated on Yeomalt Bluff overlooking Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline, the Ellis Residence is a renovation of an existing home that resulted in the reuse of more than 80% of the existing materials.

The driveway introduces visitors to the garage first, which is a longer rectilinear building with a cantilevered studio set above an open-air car port. Natural wood siding accents the garage building, which is mostly made from glazing and black metal paneling.

The home is a modern volumetric interpretation that draws inspiration from historic homes by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Arthur Erickson and even Bainbridge Island-based James Cutler.

The new home cuts energy consumption by 70% with the innovative use of geothermal heating, photovoltaic energy systems, and smart construction techniques.

The Ellis Residence's interior material palette is a mixture of stained concrete flooring, concrete block walls, rich natural wood, and painted gyp board.

During the warmer months of the year the living room literally can open up to the outdoors.

Natural daylight floods the interior living spaces of the home, and views are found in wonderful locations such as the master bathtub. Coates Design created a warm and innovative space for the Ellis family to live.
