Rintala Eggertsson’s MILU is a Sculptural Wooden Pavilion Made from Locally Sourced Timber

<a title="Rintala Eggertsson’s MILU is a Wooden Habitable Sculpture For Venice Biennale" href="http://www.ri-eg.com/" target="_blank">Rintala Eggertsson Architects</a> designed a site-specific <a title="Rintala Eggertsson’s MILU is a Wooden Habitable Sculpture For Venice Biennale" href="http://inhabitat.com/atelier-37-2s-sloping-house-appears-to-explode-on-an-extinct-volcano-in-france/" target="_blank">habitable sculpture</a> for the occasion of <a href="http://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/">Venice’s International Architecture Biennale</a>. Dubbed MILU, the layered timber structure served as a sculptural work of art and a semi-private meeting space for visitors attending the world-renowned event.

MILU was built on-site and it took <a title="Rintala Eggertsson’s MILU is a Wooden Habitable Sculpture For Venice Biennale" href="http://www.ri-eg.com/" target="_blank">Rintala Eggertsson Architects</a> and a handful of collaborators four days to finish it.

It was erected from layered locally sourced <a title="Rintala Eggertsson’s MILU is a Wooden Habitable Sculpture For Venice Biennale" href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/heartwalk-situ-studios-2013-times-square-valentine-heart-design-will-be-made-of-hurricane-sandy-debris/" target="_blank">timber</a> on a site right next to the Nordic Pavilion.

Created in 2010, MILU served for a number of activities, including meeting, socializing and also as a climbing structure for the most courageous ones.

Inside the structure, the layered planks served as seats and there is even space for a fire.

During the night, the 13-foot-high structure was illuminated from within.

With a Finnish name that stands for an archaic wooden pile structure made to produce tar, MILU paid homage to the Biennale’s theme that year: People meet in Architecture.
