Earthquake-Resistant Eco Village Wins Christchurch’s Breathe Competition

    A multi-disciplinary team made up of Christchurch-based construction company <a href="http://www.hollowaybuilders.co.nz/" target="_blank">Holloway Builders</a>, Rome-based <a href="http://www.anselmiattiani.it/aboutus/index.htm" target="_blank">Anselmi Attiani architects</a> and <a href="http://www.cresco-group.com/" target="_blank">Cresco Engineers</a> has triumphed over 58 entries from 15 countries to be selected as the winner of the <a href="http://www.futurechristchurch.co.nz/smart-building/new-urban-village-project" target="_blank">Breathe</a> Christchurch New Urban Village design competition. Once the project is financed, the multimillion-dollar design will turn 8,149 square meters of repurposed land in central Christchurch into a vibrant new urban development. The construction will use low-maintenance, durable and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bioplastics-company-ecovative-takes-top-prize-for-the-2013-buckminster-fuller-challenge/" target="_blank">sustainable building materials</a> and will incorporate the latest in seismic-resistance techniques, known as ARMIDILLO™ .

    For residential space, the project calls for 72 timber-clad dwellings consisting of both medium-rise apartments and individual two and three story houses.

    The project calls for shared green spaces for the apartments and for private gardens for the individual homes.

    The extensive complex features a commercial area on the exterior ground level with a public passageway that leads into an inner courtyard, which will have an interactive summer fountain and a reflecting pool.

    The courtyard design aims to facilitate a fully functioning urban community with inviting common areas, workshops, professional studios, small offices, a health clinic, a children's center, etc.

    The exact costs of the housing units are still under consideration, but early estimates range from $300,000 to $900,000.
