Compact Modular Pre-Fab Cottage Made from Local Materials Sits Amongst Trees Near Traverse City

Located south of Traverse City, Michigan, is the <a href="http://www.mfarchitect.com/projects/pre-fab-cottage/" target="_blank">Pre-Fab Cottage</a> designed by <a href="http://www.mfarchitect.com/" target="_blank">MF Architect</a>. Here, four modules were fabricated and then transported to the site where assembly took less than a day. Each module is 14' x 14' and made with SIPs for the walls, floor, and roof, with a precast concrete foundation system. Energy efficient envelopes, locally sourced materials, and natural daylighting all help reduce the environmental footprint of this prefab cottage.

Each module for <a href="http://www.mfarchitect.com/projects/pre-fab-cottage/" target="_blank">MF Architect's Pre-Fab Cottage</a> measures 14' x 14' in size and can be assembled in any configuration.

For this setup, the owners wanted four modules connected together via a hallway module.

Roofs can be customized for each module and clerestory windows can be added or oriented in any direction.

The <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/modular-housing" target="_blank">modules</a> for this private residence were fabricated in a shop in Traverse City, Michigan then transported in sections to the site 60 miles to the south.

Once on site, the modules were assembled and placed on an elevated foundation in five hours to create the finished cottage.

MF Architect utilized as many products from the local area as possible for the construction.

SIPs were used to build the structure, further supported by a precast concrete foundation.
