Organized by Archpolis, the international competition called for proposals for the redesign of the 515-hectare Sokolniki Park, Moscow’s largest park. Created under the rule of Peter the Great, the 19th century Sokolniki Park is a place of considerable cultural and historical significance and now serves as an urban city forest. Ten finalists from six countries were selected to develop a proposal that would strengthen the bond between the city and the park without compromising the park’s heritage and distinctive radial design.

LOLA Landscape Architects’ “Evolutionary Heritage” entry proposes a “gradual upgrading” of the park. Inspired by the ephemerality of nature, the proposal highlights the park’s constant evolution through themes that would be introduced to the park on a biennial basis and complemented with installations and lectures. The design also includes a 1.25-mile-long greenhouse sited on the park axes that would house diverse plant species year-round.
