Mexico City’s busiest avenue returning to residents as a stunning elevated public park

One of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/mexico-city/" target="_blank">Mexico City</a>'s busiest roads will soon become a pedestrian's dream. A sloping <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/public-park/" target="_blank">public park</a> with an elevated promenade will transform the 10-lane road that runs west to east between Chapultepec Park and the city center into a pleasant space with trees, cafe plazas and fountains. Fernando Romero of <a href="http://fr-ee.org/" target="_blank">FR-EE</a> teamed up with design studios <a href="http://www.frentearq.com/" target="_blank">FRENTE</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/RVDG-arquitectura-urbanismo/208221655939010?fref=ts" target="_blank">RVDG</a> to design a proposal that will make this important strip less congested and allow city commuters to enjoy this part of the Mexican capital.

The architects recently unveiled plans to transform Avenida Chapultepec into an attractive public space named Cultural Corridor Chapultepec, which will allow pedestrians to navigate the area without having to endure the noise and congestion of car traffic.

The proposal will free up spaces in the center of the strip and introduce public spaces and different modes of transport.

Thanks to the new design, the street, which dates back to the early 16th century, will be returned to the people of Mexico City and extend 1.3 kilometres between the park and the Glorieta de los Insurgentes roundabout.

Together with the introduction of new lanes, dedicated routes for cyclists and skaters, and wheelchair access, the space will provide greenery, terraces and water features.

The entire park will be divided into different zones, depending on character and context.
