California’s Volcano House boasts 360 degrees of Mojave desert views

Perched atop a 150-ft cinder cone on the edge of the Mojave desert, the Volcano House appears ready to take off to a far away planet at any second. For <a href="http://inhabitat.com/architecture/" target="_blank">architecture</a> buffs who have always dreamed of living on the moon, the Volcano House comes close and can now be yours for $650,000. Once the home of beloved California's Gold presenter Huell Howser, the property features 360 degrees of wrap-around windows that offer unencumbered views of the otherworldly Mojave landscape.

The 2,206 sq ft <a href="http://inhabitat.com/index.php?s=mid-century" target="_blank">mid-century</a> home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and high curved ceilings which reach up towards a central stone fireplace.

The buyers will easily channel their inner Don Draper while sipping cocktails on the built-in sofas in the sunken conversation pit.

The 2-story outbuilding contains a large garage and an upstairs apartment that could, according to Sotheby's "be the ideal caretaker's residence".

The curved interior and lack of walls makes decorating a challenge in the Volcano House.

A separate guesthouse sits at the bottom of the cinder cone and looks out over its own private lake.

Though Howser reportedly fell in love with the Volcano House the moment he saw in it 2003, he rarely used it and put it on the market for $750,000 a few years later. Unable to sell it, he later gifted the property to Chapman University.

Commissioned by engineer and inventor Vard Wallace in 1968 and designed by architect Harold J. Bissner Jr., the house is an icon of the mid-century modern movement.
