UK’s first rooftop geodesic science lab pops up on a girls’ school

A new wave of great female scientists may spring from a UK girls’ school’s amazing new geodesic science lab. British company <a href="http://www.solardome.co.uk" target="_blank">Solardome</a> recently installed the UK’s first rooftop geodesic dome science classroom at the <a href="http://www.watfordgrammarschoolforgirls.org.uk/" target="_blank">Watford Grammar School for Girls</a> in Hertfordshire County. Partially clad in triangular glass panels, the unusual science classroom offers 360-degree panoramic views and laboratory workstations for up to twelve students.

The eye-catching extension serves as a multi-research facility and is primarily used by A-Level Science students.

Despite its exposed appearance, the beautiful Solardome can be used year-round and is heated and cooled with an electric-source air pump.

The glass dome is made up of insulated panels and double-glazing to minimize energy use.

Perched at a highly visible rooftop location, the 21st century science lab was installed as part of the school’s plan to “bring science alive.”

Partially clad in triangular glass panels, the unusual science classroom offers 360-degree panoramic views and laboratory workstations for up to twelve students.

“Within the science department at Watford Girls we have a wealth of expertise in carrying out and publishing scientific research,” said Headmistress Dame Helen Hyde DBE. “This science dome will allow our best science students to apply for a chance to investigate their own ideas, to develop and test hypotheses and to improve their knowledge and experience.”
