• Ikea 391 sq. ft. Tiny Apartment in Red Hook Brooklyn
If you need another clue that the popularity of tiny dwellings is growing, check out this 391 sq. ft. model apartment that Ikea now has on display at its Red Hook, Brooklyn location. It seems the clever marketers at the world's most successful furniture company have caught onto New Yorkers' desires to do more with less space, and we're actually quite impressed with the amount of utility they were able to achieve - the "apartment" has a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen and a nice-sized living room - in such small quarters. As Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad said, "No method is as effective as a good example," so step inside the photo gallery to see all of the different rooms for yourself.

Small space living is nothing new to New Yorkers, but it wasn't until recently that micro apartments of 400 sq. ft. and under started becoming en vogue.

• Ikea 391 sq. ft. Tiny Apartment in Red Hook Brooklyn
The mindset change was largely inspired by Mayor Bloomberg and New York City's adAPT NYC design competition, which is challenging architects to design functional, desirable dwellings that are just 275-300 sq. ft.

And even though this is the first time we've seen Ikea highlight the diminutive size of their display apartment - the low numbers they typically like to emblazon on room displays are the prices, not the square footage measurements - they're not at all new to the small space living game.

The Swedish retailer has devoted entire editions of its globally-distributed catalog to showcasing products and solutions that allow people to build up instead of out to accommodate more urban-sized homes.

The kitchen actually still feels quite spacious because of the glass cabinet doors.

Overhead space in the bedroom is used as storage as well.

Many thanks to Ikea graphics coworker Shastri Babb, who was kind enough to send us photos of this tiny apartment display.
