Discovering Columbus: Step Inside Christopher Columbus’ Fancy 60 Ft. High Upper West Side Apt.

The <a href="http://www.publicartfund.org/" target="_blank">Public Art Fund</a> and Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi's fascinating <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/photos-controversial-discovering-columbus-elevated-room-installation-is-almost-complete-in-columbus-circle/" target="_blank">"Discovering Columbus"</a> exhibit in the middle of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Circle" target="_blank">Columbus Circle</a> officially opens today, but we sneaked in yesterday to grab a sneak peek and boy, is it...pink! While New Yorkers have seen the outside of the 60 ft. tall structure for some time now, these are some of the first photos inside the 800 sq. ft. pop-up apartment built around the Upper West Side's famous statue of Christopher Columbus. Outfitted with <a href="http://www.bloomingdales.com/" target="_blank">Bloomingdales</a> furniture, a mini-library, a flat-screen television and custom wallpaper made by the artist himself, Chris C's fancy Manhattan penthouse is certainly a sight to behold. Read on to see all of the tony accoutrements.

<a href="http://www.tatzunishi.net/top.htm" target="_blank">Tatzu Nishi </a>was brought to New York by the<a href="http://www.publicartfund.org/" target="_blank"> Public Art Fund </a>in order to find the perfect project for the city streets.

He stumbled upon the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus" target="_blank">Christopher Columbus</a> statue and was immediately drawn to the dichotomy of its public location.

The statue stood so centrally and at the same time, so far from its viewers.

He decided to build six stories of scaffolding up the statue, and construct a pop-up living room with Columbus as the centerpiece.

The room is fully furnished with tables, lamps, and even couches and chairs.

People can sit and relax on the furniture and read a magazine.

Columbus, who stands proudly in the middle of the coffee table, is presented in an entirely new format for the first time in 120 years.

The artist also designed custom wallpaper with images of what he thought New York was like as a child growing up in Japan.

The playful paper includes images of Mickey Mouse, Elvis, and McDonalds.

Even babies enjoyed the modular carpeting inside the 800 square foot apartment!

<a href="http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.beb0d8fdaa9e1607a62fa24601c789a0/" target="_blank">Mayor Bloomberg</a> attended the opening today.

He lauded the <a href="http://www.publicartfund.org/" target="_blank">Public Art Fund's</a> continuing dedication to bringing new and exciting art to New Yorkers, while also thanking locals for appreciating and respecting public art around the city.

He noted that "Discovering Columbus" is not only about getting a closer look at America's history, but also taking the time out to acknowledge the various nationalities that have helped shape the nation, especially New York.

<a href="http://www.tatzunishi.net/top.htm" target="_blank">Tatzu Nishi </a>also spoke briefly, encouraging visitors to take advantage of this amazing free exhibit that was created for each and everyone one of them.

The exhibition will be on view for the next three months.

A mini-library was filled with New York themed books.

The Christopher Columbus statue is over 120 years old.

After the three month exhibit, the statue will undergo a much needed restoration.

The artsy apartment will undoubtedly aid in touching up the monument that has stood too high for regular cleanings since its creation.

The apartment is 800 square feet.

After 120 years with only pigeons for company, he now will live in a penthouse in Columbus Circle, with views of Central Park, and enjoy a housewarming party with an expected 100,000 people."
