Beautiful Harvest Dome Constructed from 450 Found Umbrellas Wins the Dwell Vision Award

<a href="http://sloarchitecture.com/03_Work/Harvest%20Dome%202.0/havest%20dome%202.html#image4">Harvest Dome 2.0</a> was just announced as the winner of the <a href="http://www.dwell.com">Dwell</a> <a href="http://www.dwell.com/latest/slideshow/dwell-media-announces-winner-dwell-vision-award-slo-architecture">Vision Award</a>, a new design competition sponsored by <a href="http://www.bigassfans.com/">Big Ass Fans</a>. The innovative design is the second coming of <a href="http://sloarchitecture.com/">SLO Architecture's</a> delicate art installation made from 450 found umbrella frames and plastic two-liter bottles. As we reported about a year and a half ago, the original <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/floating-harvest-dome-made-of-recycled-umbrella-spokes-crashes-into-rikers-island/">Harvest Dome</a> met its end in a destructive crash on Riker's Island, but the installation's creators, Amanda Schachter and Alexander Levi, decided to fund a second attempt through Kickstarter.

Harvest Dome 2.0 can be seen in the evening thanks to the addition of LED lights.

The umbrellas used as structure give the dome a delicate, web-like expression.

The dome was carefully transferred from a barge to the waterway with the help of the local canoe club.

Harvest Dome 2.0 floats on 128 two liter, plastic bottles.

Visitors can enjoy the installation from the shore or hop in a kayak to get a closer view.

According to the husband and wife design team's kickstarter campaign, the 24-foot diameter sphere stands "as a physical revelation of the city's accumulated waterborne debris."

Visit the land art installation through Labor Day at Inwood Hills Park Inlet in Northern Manhattan.
