If Queens's <a href="http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/m/mib.html#.U06oJ_lCZ74">Men in Black movie cameo</a> wasn't enough for you, Chad Kellogg and Matt Bowles of <a href="http://www.amlgmlabs.com/">AMLGM Labs</a> have a crazy-looking new building for the borough that would be the perfect backdrop for an alien invasion film. Called <a href="http://www.amlgmlabs.com/urban-alloy-towers/">Urban Alloy Towers</a>, the transit hub would connect with the existing <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/tag/lirr/">LIRR station</a> in <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/nine-miles-of-new-bike-lanes-coming-to-queens/">Woodside</a> and reach into the sky with coral-like limbs. The structure was also designed with an energy-efficient, flexible skin to block glaring sunlight from directly entering the hub's interior.

Beyond a skin-deep level of innovation, the building has also been designed to use the “remnant spaces” of the surrounding intersection and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/new-queensway-workshops-reveal-plans-for-zip-lines-ping-pong-tables-and-a-giant-slide/">elevated LIRR tracks</a>.

As such the parts of the building extend outwards towards the street. From above the Urban Alloy Towers look like a cross that’s been overlaid the city streets.

The interior of the building, meanwhile, features a variety of housing types, plus retail space and commercial offices.
    6
  • AMLGM Labs Urban Alloy Towers Atrium
At the center of the retail spaces there’s also plans to build an expansive <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/atrium/">atrium</a> for visitors to look down and see the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/first-portion-of-santiago-calatrava-designed-world-trade-center-transportation-hub-opens-to-public-photos/">transit hub</a>. It’s unlikely we’ll ever see the Urban Alloy Towers ever become a reality, but it’s certainly a unique and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/new-york-citys-hidden-rooftop-houses/">interesting design</a>.
