‘Must love sharks.’ If Airbnb’s latest contest were a personal ad, that would be the headline. The hospitality company is looking for two people to spend a night in an underwater bedroom submerged in the shark tank of France’s L’Aquarium de Paris. The contest entry rules are fairly simple: Airbnb is asking for short essays from wanna-be shark neighbors that explains why the heck they would want to sleep in an aquarium surrounded by the razor-toothed swimmers.
Airbnb is asking for people to submit essays 50 to 500 words long that describe themselves and why they should be chosen for this special sleepover. Two lucky winners will be selected after April 3, and they will spend one April night in the glass-walled underwater bedroom, hedged on all sides by 35 sharks. This contest marks the first time the aquarium has ever opened up its ‘underwater bedroom’ to outside guests.
The aquarium’s underwater room is situated 33 feet below the water’s surface and makes the perfect observation spot for shark lovers. The two contest winners will be treated to an underwater show by shark conservationist and world renowned free-diver Fred Buyle, who promises to ‘dance’ with the sharks around the underwater bedroom. A guided behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium is also part of the prize. Presumably, the tour will wrap up at a reasonable hour and the guests will be left alone to enjoy the 360-degree view and relax on the round bed—at least as much as one can relax with scores of sharks swimming just a few feet away.
The contest will close 11:59PM CET on April 3, and Airbnb will announce the winners on April 9.
