The proposal has Bourdain’s market consuming the first and second floors of the old pier, in an ambitious endeavor to curate NYC’s first-ever 155,000-square-foot, $60 million food market, which the chef has described as inspired by “an Asian night market.” Just as Bourdain himself is not your average, everyday TV personality, so too his market will not be average in any way. At the heart of the chef’s mission is the drive to create an authentic foodie haven for a variety of ethnic cuisines, filling every corner of its SuperPier space with something delicious, distinctive, and different.
The gigantic “shipping container mall” that will take over Pier 57 is also planned to have a 13,000-square-foot rooftop park with movable shades and brilliantly colored blossoms. Plans suggest that space will host outdoor events like film festivals and music concerts, in addition to providing a green getaway from the hum of the city.
The market is slated for a 2018 opening, and the interior space will be designed by Roman and Williams. We’re practically salivating for the chance to see what they will create with Bourdain’s inspiration. Once the market opens, visitors will surely have no reservations about the installation of such a massive, diverse food offering in the giant “anti-mall” which promises something for everyone. Based on his recent experiences, perhaps Bourdain will even save a little room for his new favorite cultural icon: Waffle House.
