Although the official groundbreaking ceremony for the much-anticipated NY Ferris Wheel is scheduled for February of next year, work has already begun on the parking area around the mammoth project. The 650-foot observation wheel, which is slated for completion in 2017, will have 36 slow-moving capsules and provide stellar views of the Manhattan skyline. Not only will it be the largest Ferris wheel in the world upon completion, but also the greenest!
Located on Staten Island’s St. George waterfront, the massive project’s first step will be to create a temporary parking lot for construction work. Located northwest of the Staten Island Yankees stadium, the completed London Wheel-esque project will be a seven-acre park with retail space, a hotel, restaurants and a large parking garage.

Designed by Perkins Eastman, the New York Terminal Wheel will be equipped with enough sustainable features to shoot for LEED Platinum certification. Strategically taking advantage of Staten Island’s natural surroundings, the project will count on an abundance of sustainable alternative energy sources such as wind, water and sun to power the wheel and the park sites. In fact, the organizers are hoping to not only operate the wheel with a renewable energy source, but also to generate enough to provide extra energy to surrounding Staten Island neighborhoods.
